Kakaban: Lake In the Middle Sea

The lake is located on the island Kakaban not like the lakes in general. At first, the lake is the lagoon of an atoll, formed of rocks more than 2 million years ago. At that time the appointment process has occurred for several thousand years, which makes the surrounding coral reef rises above sea level. Five square kilometers of seawater trapped in the embankment with a height of 50m, making the area of the lake water. The lake is surrounded by mangrove trees and around the island itself is covered by dense trees. Part Kakaban coastline overlooking the sea surrounded by coral reefs, steep decline.
Where is Kakaban lake?
Lake "jellyfish" in Kakaban Kakaban which are uninhabited, is situated in the Celebes Sea in the north SANGKULIRANG Peninsula, not far from the Kutai National Park in East Kalimantan. Kakaban, as well as other islands in the archipelago Derawan into Berau District.
Establishment of the origin of Lake Kakaban

Why Lake Kakaban Unique?
The types of living things found in Lake Kakaban basically is the kind that live in salt water as sea algae, sea anemones, jellyfish, sponges, sea cucumbers or sea cucumbers, crabs, and the types of other small fish. For thousands of years they have been adapting and adjusting to life in brackish water environments are isolated because of sea water, which seems to go into the lake through the cracks in the rocks around the reef has terbaur with rain water. Not find a large channel or cave that connects the two. Therefore, no large animals can enter or exit from the lake for thousands of years.

Scientists are still trying to marine areas to solve the mystery of how an isolated lake ecosystems and vulnerable communities can provide for animals and plants that live in it. The only known similar lakes with Lake Kakaban only found in Palau, an island nation in Micronesia, with fewer species when compared with Kakaban.

Type of Animal and Plant in Lake Kakaban
Lots of living species found in Lake Kakaban. There are about three species of Halimeda green algae cover the basic areas of shallow lakes, and the roots of mangrove trees there are several tunikata, sponges, tube worms, clams symmetrical, crustaceans, sea anemones, sea cucumbers, several types of sea snakes, fish cardinals, and at least five types of gobies. Some species of other living creatures can not be identified. The lake is enriched by four types of jellyfish (Cassiopeia ornata, Mastigias papua, Aurelia aurita and Tripedalia cystophora), compared with only two species found in Palau.

Cassiopeia or "upside-down jellyfish" can be found lying in the bottom of a shallow lake to get the sun in order to process the food. One more interesting that can be found in Lake Kakaban, the anemone-eating jellyfish. This anemone is white because it has lost symbiosisnya with green algae (zooxanthellae). This anemone eating jellyfish that swam too close to him so that tentacles hooked.
